This radio came to me 8/31/2026. It was cruddy, but in good condition. I installed two AA batteries, and the radio did not work. The only activity was a little “pop” when switched on/off.Research:
Radiomuseum says this radio was made 1975-’78. They have six transistors and one IF stage.Diagnosis:
The radio was dead. I began with a quick check to see if its oscillator was running. It was not. I disassembled the radio and had a carefully look at its installed components. I found that one of its legs of the resistor that provides voltage to its converter transistor was broken. I replaced that 270ohm resistor with a new one which repaired the radio.It is my policy to replace all the electrolytic capacitors in the vintage radios I sell. They have a shelf life of about twenty-five years, so replacing them keeps a vintage radio working its best for a long time. This radio uses two of them. Both measured tired at 50%+ their rated values.Other standard service checks: Deox in volume control, lock dial retaining screws, check earphone jack, etc.With that work done, I gave its cabinet a good cleaning. Underneath fifty years of crud was quite a nice radio. While cleaning, I found a closed crack in the top left corner of its back half. I clamped and sealed that off. It’s hard to see.With everything clean and working, next came its reassembly and a double check of its alignment.That was that… a typical “karl treatment”.Performance:
Volume control goes smoothly from totally silent to overload loud. For strong local stations it produces a sound that is Clean and Clear.The radio is working like new. These, having just one IF stage, are decent performers. Sounds good. KEX, one of my local clear channel stations tunes in crystal clear. KLYC is a weak station (at night 1Kw) in the next town over, McMinnville, about thirty miles away. It tuned in.Condition:
No chips. One closed and sealed crack. A few light scratches here and there that reveals it is used. It’s a nice radio.
