Traditional Japanese Sasano ittō-bori Otaka Poppo hawk carving, hand-carved and hand-painted from a single block of wood and standing approximately 9.5 inches tall.

Originating in the Sasano district of Yonezawa, Yamagata Prefecture, Otaka Poppo carvings are among Japan\'s best-known forms of mingei folk art. These stylized hawks are carved using a distinctive single-blade technique known as ittō-bori, which leaves bold geometric facets and dramatic ribbon-like feather curls. Traditionally regarded as symbols of good fortune, prosperity, and protection, Otaka Poppo carvings have been produced in northern Japan for generations.

Yamagata Furusato Kougei

This example features elaborate curled wings and tail feathers, black and yellow painted accents, and a signed base with a red artist\'s seal. The inscription ends with 作 (\"made by\"), while the maker\'s name remains unconfirmed.

Condition is vintage and displays beautifully, but there are losses and wear to some of the fragile feather elements, consistent with age and handling. Please inspect all photographs carefully before purchasing.
