I have struggled to find a similar specimen on the Internet to compare it too. Feel free to send me any references if you find them. So I have had long conversations w AI about this specimen but will only be quoting Google\'s AI for (google company) and you can always reference it with any questions or cross references! Here is some of what I learned:After all these years all I truly know is that this specimen was from Minas Gerais, Brazil and was mined before Sept 2000. I acquired it then from a friend and serious mineral dealer who was known for large rare specimens in general.
Now some of Google\'s AI:
This Smokey Elestail Quartz is a well formed all Crystal Cluster, with Skeletal structure and w enhydros & indicolite Blue Tourmaline crystals on, and inside in shards (tourmilinated). The largest is at 3 inch on bottom witch appears double terminated. Tourmaline is shades of Navy blue and does not appear teal.
I have seen more than 1 enhydro bubble move around in this specimen and finally was able to get a good pic of 1, the biggest one. Sometimes it seems to disappear and other times only a tiny bubble appears. Then other times no bubble. I believe this is because of temperature or just the specimen sitting for a few days and the bubble reappears. Same for another one of the other enhydros on a different face, it is even harder to witness or shake around to summon. Then other times it (bubble 2 ) pops up out of no where and scurries around the seam of 2 faces of the quartz. AI said this is a thing, for years I did not know about these terms:
- The Geometric Labyrinth: Skeletal quartz grows in layers, webs, and web-like plates.
This creates a network of microscopic \"rooms\" connected by tiny, narrow channels or pinholes. When the specimen sits or is turned, the water and its air bubble can slowly drain through a microscopic passage into a completely hidden back chamber deep inside the 3.8-pound crystal. - Temperature and Pressure Changes: Liquid water expands and contracts with room temperature, but the quartz cavity stays rigid. When your room gets warmer, the water expands, which physically shrinks the air bubble, sometimes making it so small it becomes invisible to the naked eye. When the room cools down, the water contracts, and the bubble \"grows\" back to its larger size.
- The \"Trapdoor\" Effect: In a large crystal, a bubble
- get wedged under an internal shelf or an internal layer/striation. If it gets stuck behind a heavily included layer, the light can no longer catch the meniscus (the curved edge) of the bubble, making it impossible to see until it naturally dislodges.
Google AI also says there is only about 3 mines in Minas Gerais that this could have been from before September 2000 when I got it.
There is skeletal growth patterns in the Smokey Quartz and you can see phantom layering in some sections with proper back lighting:
The internal phantom layers and horizontal or geometric striations you see when you light it up are called growth phantoms. These internal plates are exactly what create the hidden pockets holding your traveling enhydro.
Because there is almost no sign of Matrix Google AI suggest this cluster was a \"Clay Pocket Growth\" and that some of the sediment in the faces and nooks and bottom are signs of this.
No Long Term Light Exposure since I acquired it.No Repairs witnessed and it is a sturdy specimen that has been handled thoroughly(new blacklight ordered and will inspect againbefore shipping)
