Here is a really interesting natural piece. It is a natural slab of magnetite, hematite, and tiny amount of sphalerite, and a magnetized steel ball bearing. From Yerington, Nevada. Though Yerington Mining District is famous for its copper, magnetite is also found here.
The hematite is brighter than the magnetite and displays lines throughout. The magnetite is more of a dark solid color.
Take the steel ball and put it on the slab (either side works) and give it a gentle push. Please, please see the video. Each time you push the ball, it \"searches\" out magnetite and comes to rest on it. Also, if you put the steel ball on a flat surface, and gently put the slab on it, the slab will sometimes pick the ball up.
The slab measures about 4.82\" at the longest measurement (122.43 mm). and is about 10-11 mm thick. The slab and ball together weigh 12.05 oz . (340 grams).
