We are looking nearly south, up the famous Lauterbrunnen valley. Interlachen, between the Lakes of Brienz and Thun, is about ten miles away behind us at the foot of the valley. Down here in this narrow cleft of the mountains we cannot see far, but the Jungfrau is away up at our left, out of sight, and the village of Murren is up beyond those cliffs at the right, three miles farther along toward the head of this valley.
\"This is the ‘sky-born waterfall’ of Wordsworth’s verse. Look at that marvelous ribbon of mist and spray as it swings from the top of the cliff. Its volume is nothing in comparison with the falls at Schaffhausen—here it is not quantity, but quality, that charms. We can almost see the filmy veil sway in the breeze while we watch it!\"
The enormous height of those cliffs is more and more impressive as we look up toward their far-away tops—see the tops of the houses almost look like soft hair on the body of some huge, furry monster. No wonder! They are about 3000 feet above our heads. A large part of the cliffs can not be seen. Off to Interlachen (behind us), the valley is shut in by such frowning walls—some time by walls still higher than these. It makes the sunrises very late and the sunsets very early—in midwinter the sun is seen only for a few hours about noon. Still there are people who live here all the year round. You see they have telegraphic communication with the rest of the world, but it is a lonely place here in the dead of winter, when the fall is only a ragged icicle against the cliff, and the snows pile high and the sun can often get one glance down here each day.\"
