Striking black-and-white photographic photomontage by Linda Mann, dated 1981, from the collection of photographer and longtime San Francisco State University photography professor Neal M. White (1947–2024).
A companion in style and period to [ https://.io/m/uatpt8] a Linda Mann work from the same collection, this imaginative constructed photograph transforms a dense woodland landscape into an impossible environment. Five large illustrated fish appear to swim or float among the trees, while a warthog-like animal stands incongruously on the forest floor. Nearby is an open illustrated jar labeled “ATLAS SPECIAL MASON,” adding another peculiar element to an already dreamlike scene.
The work combines a photographic landscape with introduced imagery at deliberately improbable scales. The result is playful, strange, and visually sophisticated, with the dark woodland functioning almost like an underwater environment for the floating fish.
The unframed photograph measures approximately 11 x 14 inches. Pencil notations on the verso include apparent darkroom/printing information reading “f32 / #3 / 15 sec.” Additional faint pencil identification appears along the edge of the verso. The photograph is attributed to Linda Mann and dated 1981 within this group of SFSU student work.
This photograph comes from the personal collection of Prof. Neal M. White, who taught photography at San Francisco State University, and is understood to have originated as student work from that context.
An especially appealing example of experimental and constructed photography from the early 1980s, and a compelling companion to Mann\'s other surreal photomontage from the same collection.
