Tom Wright at the Throttle; or, The Belle of the Midnight Special
Street & Smith “Comrades” No. 3
New York: Street & Smith, April 14, 1900.

A wonderfully atmospheric and visually compelling early American railroad pulp, issued as part of Street & Smith’sComrades: Tales of Adventure for Young Folksseries. The dramatic color cover illustration depicts a tense locomotive-cab scene aboard the “Midnight Special,” with bold period typography and strong graphic appeal that immediately captures the eye.

These fragile weekly adventure papers were printed on inexpensive newsprint stock and were heavily read, making survivals in presentable condition increasingly uncommon in the marketplace. This example retains its original illustrated wrappers and displays beautifully despite expected wear.

The issue is clearly dated April 14, 1900, and includes the full sensational title:
“Tom Wright at the Throttle; or, The Belle of the Midnight Special.”

The combination of:

  • railroad imagery
  • turn-of-the-century juvenile adventure fiction
  • Street & Smith pulp history
  • strong Americana graphics
  • and locomotive-themed cover art

gives the piece broad crossover appeal to collectors of railroadiana, dime novels, juvenile series fiction, pulps, Americana, and vintage illustrated ephemera.

Condition: Original paper wraps. Complete. General edge wear, corner creasing, small chips and short tears along extremities and spine, age toning, handling wear, and scattered creases consistent with fragile pulp/newsprint production. Interior generally clean and fully readable. Structurally sound and visually striking.

An exceptionally displayable 1900 railroad adventure weekly with outstanding shelf and framed-display potential.
