Turkish Telkari Silver Filagree Belt Section , Trabzon Region, 9” Long, 67 Grams:
$50.00

This piece came to me through family that lived in the Middle East in the 1960s and 1970s. Including in Istanbul. So when I started to research this I was sure it could not have been made after then. And in fact my research shows it is a filagree silver Telkari piece handmade in Turkey in the mid-20th century, from the Trabzon region of Turkey. To get to that point I did several recommended tests to determine it was silver through and through not plated. All the tests reflected silver. And the conclusion of my research, although someone out there may be an expert on this, I am not, is that this is a section of a finely crafted women’s dress belt composed of six articulated filagree plaques plus a buckle, executed in traditional Telkari filagree technique characteristic of the Trabzon region of northeastern Turkey. The belt segment features hand-drawn silver wire shaped into dense scrollwork, with central oval medallions formed from tightly woven mesh filagree. At first I thought this might be a bracelet but apparently it is too heavy for that and the design is typical of a belt, with at some point this segment becoming detached from the full belt.
The belt segment exhibits natural black silver tarnish, indicating high silver content (likely 800-900 silver). There are no markings, which is common to this type of production as I understand it. The weight is 67 grams, the length 9 inches, the length top to bottom of the segments about 1 3/4 inches.
This appears to me to be in excellent condition.
As this is a section not the full belt I have priced this accordingly, I believe, although the current price range for a silver piece of this quality might justify more.Shipping free to buyer, shipping only to US locations.
