UNUSUAL BRUTALIST HEAVY SAND-CAST POLISHED ALUMINUM COCKTAIL SHAKER C 1954 For Sale

For sale is one of very few (only?) example(s) of Brutalism in a cocktail shaker.The Brutalist movement, which dominated architecture and decorative arts from the mid-1950s through the 1970s, was defined by three core principles that are prevalently instilled into the design of this unusual cocktail shaker:

• The Honesty of Raw Materials: Brutalism rejected delicate ornamentation. It celebrated the heavy weight, thickness, and inherent structural qualities of unrefined mediums like raw concrete, iron, and sand-cast aluminum.
• Organic, Textural Distortion: The heavily pebbled, rugged, \"molten lava\" surface of your shaker\'s cap directly echoes the jagged, hand-sculpted, or fractured metal textures popularized by mid-century Brutalist designers.
• Asymmetry and Heft: The off-center, sloping angle of the cap gives the piece a deliberate blocky, sculptural form that values physical weight and functional presence over traditional symmetry.

Made of sand-molded cast aluminum with a unadorned body, footed bottom, this shaker stands 12.25\" tall and 4\" wide. It is very heavy, with 1/4\" walls, cork-sealed top with self-strainer and push-on cap. The manufacturer is unknown.
This exact shaker appears on page 197 in Stephen Visakay\'s Vintage Bar Ware. This 1997 reference suggests a price of $175 - $225. I have priced this shaker to sell.
It has been in my personal collection since the late 1990s and has been very well cared for. It is in very good condition with exceptions noted.
