Long time local sculptress and author Dorothy Jean (Kay) Henkel at the age of 94 in 2019. Kay was born in Olympia Washington on October 17th 1925. She raised her children in Edmonds, WA and moved to Palm Springs in 1989. As a long time member and sculpting teacher at the Desert Art Center she was an honored member of the National Sculpture Society, and was a top award winner of five consecutive years at the prestigious Palm Springs Desert Museum. Kay was well known for commissions in concrete, clay, and bronze which included the "Elevator" sculptures, the life-size plaster figures and the bronze life size surveyor piece now in Pioneer Square Yucca Valley.
