There was a stretch of the early 1960s when post offices, philatelic clubs, and small-town postmasters across the country all marked the Civil War Centennial together — temporary exhibition stations, custom cachet artwork, and commemorative cancellations turned everyday envelopes into little time capsules of American history. These covers came out of exactly that moment, and genuine survivors from the series have been collected ever since.
The back adhesive on these sixty-year-old covers shows through just the way genuine period envelope gum does — you can see it in the photos. It is honest evidence of an untouched original that was never soaked or restored.
