This is a vintage handcrafted African soapstone chess set from Kenya featuring a round, incised board with etched fish motifs and abstract carved pieces. These specific Kenyan soapstone chess sets are not mass-produced in a single year, but rather handcrafted by local artisans—primarily from the Kisii region of Kenya—spanning from the late 1970s, 1980s, through the 1990s. Because they are individually hand-carved folk art pieces made over several decades for the tourist and export markets, individual sets rarely feature a stamped production date. Because they are handcrafted there are natural flaws. A red pawn piece has a chip (see photo).
