VintageAcoma Pueblo Indian Polychrome Hand-Coiled Pottery Jar/ Olla, SignedK. Aragon, Circa 1980-90's

Thisfinely decorated hand-coiled Acoma jar is a small version of afull-sized water jar or olla with the concave base for carrying onthe head. The painted decoration is very complex and exactinglyexecuted. It is signed K. Aragon along the edge of the base and thesignature wasn't discovered until a glued-on felt pad was removed. The jar is in excellent condition with very minor wear and some glueresidue around the edge of the base (see photos).

Theartist, Karen Aragon, is listed as a potter working at Acoma in thelist compiled by author and researcher Rick Dillingham between 1986and 1991. That list appears in Rick Dillingham, Acoma and LagunaPottery, School of American Research Press, 1992, Appendix B, Pgs.206-208. Karen Aragon was likely born in the 1960's or early 70's, andthis jar is likely an example of her early work. She comes from thelarge extended Aragon Family at Acoma which has produced many finepotters.

Dimensions: 4-3/4" tall, 5-1/2" maximum diameter/ wide, 4"diameter at top, 2-1/2" base diameter

Condition: Excellent. No cracks, chips or repairs. The jar shows minimal wearand has some glue residue around the edge of the concave base (from aremoved felt pad-see photos).
