Distinctive vintage Aichi Seitosho porcelain hinged trinket or jewelry box, made in Japan and imported by A.A. Importing Co. of St. Louis, Missouri. The substantial square box measures approximately 4.5 inches on all sides and features colorful floral transfer decoration, a sculpted cobalt-blue lid border, distressed gold accents, and metal fittings.
The underside bears a blue Aichi Seitosho backstamp incorporating “EST. 1828,” along with the original A.A. Importing Co. foil label. The 1828 date is part of the maker’s mark and is not being represented as the manufacture date of this particular box. Exact production date is unknown.
The box presents attractively overall. There is a noticeable transferware/decorative application flaw within the large flower on top of the lid, clearly shown in the close-up photograph. The hinge remains securely attached and functional but has considerable looseness or wiggle when the lid is moved. Additional vintage wear includes rubbing and loss to the gold decoration, minor surface marks, and age-related wear to the metal fittings. Please examine all photographs closely for condition and construction details.
