Vintage Canadian Red Ensign Flag 4 x 6 Dettra Cotton Bunting Pre 1965 Union Jack For Sale

Canadian Red Ensign, the de facto national flag of Canada until the Maple Leaf flag was adopted in 1965. Red cotton bunting field with a Union Jack canton and, in the fly, the shield of the Canadian arms granted in 1921: the lions of England, the lion of Scotland, the harp of Ireland, the fleurs de lis of France, and a sprig of three maple leaves at the base. The harp is drawn with a female figure, the version used in the arms before 1957, while the maple leaves are red, so the flag is dated here only as before 1965. The Union Jack is sewn from pieced cotton, the printed shield panel is sewn to the field with zigzag stitching, and the three red cotton maple leaves are appliqued with embroidered veins. The white cotton hoist heading carries two brass grommets and a printed label reading Detco Process, Bull Dog Bunting, Guaranteed Extra Fast, 100% Cotton, 2 Ply Warp and 2 Ply Filling, with the Dettra Flag Products shield mark, plus CANADA stamped in ink and 4 x 6 marked by hand. Measures approximately 70 by 41 inches. Condition: used, with the patina of a flown flag. The white stripes of the Union show yellow toning and scattered brown spotting, the heading is soiled, and the white of the shield has light gray spotting. There is light fraying at the fly corner hem and loose thread ends on the appliqued leaves. The red field is strong in color with a few faint spots and ordinary fold creases. Seams and stitching are intact.
