Beautiful and unusually ornate vintage West German singing bird automaton box, attributed to Eschle, dating approximately to the 1950s–1960s.
This is a substantial, very well-made example weighing approximately 683 grams (1.5 lbs.). The gilt metal case is richly decorated throughout, with elaborate raised figural scenes around the sides and finely patterned borders. The lid is engraved/embossed with scrolling floral decoration and is centered by a striking oval green enamel-on-metal panel with a marbled malachite appearance.
The box stands on four rounded gilt feet. The underside has a fixed/non-removable winding key, another construction detail seen on documented Eschle singing-bird boxes of this period.
When activated by the control, the oval lid opens and the feathered bird rises through the ornate pierced metal grille. The bird moves and sings before descending back into the box and the lid closes.
Identification
I have researched this piece extensively. Several construction details correspond closely with documented Eschle West German singing-bird automatons, including:
The distinctive pierced filigree grille pattern
Fixed underside winding key
Rounded gilt feet
Bird and operating arrangement
Gilt metal case construction
Period West German manufacture and decorative treatment
Comparable documented Eschle examples have been dated approximately 1955–1965. This example is unmarked, so I am listing the maker as attributed to Eschle rather than representing the attribution as absolutely confirmed.
Condition & Operation
The automaton works.
The bird rises, moves and sings, and the door operates as intended. The mechanism does, however, occasionally slow during operation, indicating that it would benefit from professional cleaning/lubrication/service. I have intentionally not attempted to service or dismantle the mechanism.
The underside retains an old instruction label reading:
NEVER LIFT DOOR
DO NOT FORCE DOOR DOWN
NEVER HANDLE THE BIRD
Only use front lever to operate
If door stay open the mechanism needs to be wound”
There is age-related wear, patina and minor surface wear consistent with a vintage mechanical object. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
The bird retains its colorful feather covering and the interior pierced grille is particularly attractive.
No maker\'s mark has been located on the exterior of the box.
Important Note
This is a delicate vintage mechanical automaton. Although it is currently operational, it is being sold as a vintage mechanical collectible that should be professionally serviced for optimum operation. I cannot guarantee continued operation of an approximately 60–70-year-old mechanism without servicing.
