Up for sale is a spectacular piece of early American automotive and industrial history: a 100% complete set of vintage architectural cast aluminum building sign letters spelling out HAYNES-APPERSON.
Discovered locally in Kokomo, Indiana—the "City of Firsts" and home to legendary pioneer Elwood Haynes—this sign almost certainly adorned a local historic showroom, dealership, or commemorative building dedicated to Indiana's first automobile manufacturer.
Every letter is a sand-cast aluminum piece manufactured by the prestigious Spanjer Bros. of Chicago, the absolute gold standard for premium 20th-century architectural lettering. The reverse side of the letters features the raised foundry stamp: "SPANJER BROS / CHICAGO".
The style is Art Deco / Streamline Modern. Letters feature a distinctly tapered / beveled profile with a flared base, meaning the letters are thicker where they meet the wall and slope inward toward a crisp front face." Also, the letters have a slightly crowned face. They measure approx. .77 deep at the top and bottom and approx. .80" deep in the middle.This historic "crowned" face design ensures the letters look perfectly flat and distortion-free when viewed from a distance on a building facade.
