This is a beautiful vintage set of 11 traditional Japanese Tanzaku poem cards, carefully preserved by my grandmother in Japan.
The collection includes a wonderful mixture of traditional Japanese calligraphy and illustrated artwork, making it a unique set for collectors of Japanese art, calligraphy, poetry, and vintage paper items.
Among the 11 pieces:
- 4 Tanzaku feature handwritten waka poems from the Hyakunin Isshu, written by my grandmother, who was a Japanese calligraphy teacher.
- The numbers written on the backs correspond to poems No. 8, 9, 15, and 19 from the Hyakunin Isshu.
- 7 illustrated Tanzaku feature traditional Japanese motifs such as a samurai helmet (kabuto), Hina dolls, flowers, the kanji “福” (fortune/happiness), and other charming Japanese designs.
- Several of the illustrated pieces have red artist seals.
The illustrated Tanzaku appear to have been collected and treasured by my grandmother. The artist of these illustrated pieces is unknown.
The set also comes with the original-style storage boxes and paper covers shown in the photos.

Vintage pre-owned condition.
