Striking handcrafted and hand-painted sculptural leather mask attributed to Jim Gibeault, a New Orleans artist known for his distinctive handmade leather masks.
This unusual mask is designed as a highly stylized fantasy fish, featuring a dramatic raised tail, sculpted fins and dimensional facial structure. It is individually painted in rich red, gold, orange, green, purple and black tones with detailed graphic patterns throughout.
The dimensional construction and bold hand-painted decoration make this an impressive example of wearable art as well as a unique decorative wall piece.
About the Artist:
Jim Gibeault was a leather mask artist who spent many years living and working in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He became known for individually crafted fantasy and theatrical leather masks associated with the city's masquerade and Mardi Gras tradition.
Signed by the artist on the reverse.
Vintage pre-owned condition with visible age-related wear, surface marks and paint wear consistent with use and age. There are remnants from old adhesive labels on the reverse. Please examine all photographs carefully for condition and details.
The original ties have been lost. I am including a replacement stretchable elastic tie so the mask can be worn or displayed.
A wonderful piece for collectors of New Orleans art, Mardi Gras memorabilia, folk art, leather art, theatrical masks and unusual wearable art.
