Striking vintage Mexican pottery jaguar cat figure with a wonderful primitive, pre-Columbian-inspired appearance.
The hollow clay figure has a matte turquoise/green surface with black speckling and areas of warm terracotta color showing through, creating an aged, weathered patina. The dog has a wonderfully expressive face with an open mouth, modeled teeth, collar, sturdy legs and an upright tail.
There is a rectangular opening in the back measuring approximately 1.5” x 1.25”, as well as a small round opening on the underside. The exact original purpose is unknown, so I am listing it as a decorative pottery figure rather than assigning a specific function.

• 5” high to the top of the ears
• 4” high to the top of the tail
• Approximately 4.5” wide across the feet
• Back opening approximately 1.5” x 1.25”
Unmarked. Believed to be Mexican in origin.
The surface has a deliberately aged/distressed appearance with variations in the turquoise-green finish, exposed clay color, dark speckling and surface wear. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.
A very appealing piece of Mexican folk pottery with strong pre-Columbian influence — especially nice for a collection of Mexican ceramics, folk art, pottery animals or Southwestern décor.
