Vintage hand-painted charger plate from Penzo Pottery, which originated in Zimbabwe. Founded by designer Penelope Penzo, the studio became famous for training local, independent African artisans to create vibrantly detailed, narrative ceramic art featuring African wildlife.
The Studio: Penzo was founded in 1993 by artist and former nurse Penelope "Penny" Vincent. The studio was established to empower young women and men in Zimbabwe by teaching them high-level ceramic painting skills to achieve economic self-sufficiency.
Uniqueness: Because these vintage pieces were fully handcrafted and hand-painted in Zimbabwe during the 1990s and early 2000s, no two plates are exactly identical. Each one is usually individually signed or initialed on the back by the specific artist who painted it.
The Crazing: The fine web of spiderweb-like lines visible across the surface is called crazing. This is an expected occurrence over time in the glaze of vintage earthenware and pottery, often happening due to age or thermal expansion.
