Vintage Mexican Tonalá-Style Petatillo Hand-Painted Pottery Plate – 2 Owls & Floral Folk Art
Beautiful vintage Mexican decorative pottery plate featuring a wonderfully stylized yellow Owls surrounded by large flowers, leaves and scrolling botanical designs.
The plate is decorated in the traditional petatillo style, recognizable by the intricate black crosshatched background resembling the weave of a Mexican petate mat. Petatillo decoration is particularly associated with the pottery traditions of Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico.
The vivid folk-art palette includes golden ochre, yellow, green, black, white and a deep cobalt-blue border. Numerous individually painted dots and fine lines give the design wonderful texture and detail.
The central Owls have a particularly charming Mexican folk-art appearance, with oversized almond-shaped eyes and highly stylized facial features.
