Authentic Mid-Century Vermont Folk Art
Up for sale is a beautiful, authentic vintage hand-decorated maple sap bucket by renowned Vermont artist Tom Fitzsimons (Manchester, Vermont, circa 1960). Known for converting utilitarian wooden farmware into highly collectible pieces of Americana, Fitzsimons’ work is featured in regional collections like the Bennington Museum.
This particular bucket features his highly sought-after American Eagle motif, showcasing a hand-painted eagle with outspread wings holding an olive branch against a warm, honey-toned stained background. The bottom retains its vibrant, original yellow-and-pink foil maker's label, which notes the finish is "Alcohol Resistant"—a nod to its original mid-century marketing as a decorative bar accessory or ice bucket.

This piece is in good vintage condition with an incredible authentic patina, though it does show standard signs of age and wear:
Paint Wear / Flaking: There is light vertical cracking, paint loss, and flaking along the central wood seams, most notably running down the center of the eagle's body and through the lower red/blue ribbon motif.
Surface Scratches: There are minor scuffs, light surface scratches, and tiny paint specks consistent with a 60-year-old piece of functional folk art.
Structural Integrity: The wooden staves and thick metal bands remain tight and structurally sound. No loose pieces or significant separation.
Foil Label: The label on the inside is remarkably intact, completely legible, and bright.
