Vintage Tyndale White Ceramic Cactus Lamp Made in Italy dated 1973 New Shade :
$285.00

A Tyndale white ceramic cactus lamp. just under 17” tall. The ceramic base was made in Italy. Newly made white opaque parchment shade, 16” inches diameter, replicating the original. The felt protective bottom is loose - which reveals a sticker saying “Erma Made in Italy” Interestingly there is a date, March 9, 1973, stamped on back of felt pad, probabably when it left the Tyndale factory (even though the base was imported the lamps were wired in New Jersey in the 1970s. The company was later acquired by Frederick Cooper & moved to Chicago)Tyndale was a very popular maker of fashionable, “better” lamps in the 1970s, sold in fine department and home furnishing stores. This is the smallest of four Cactus lamps Tyndale sold, all in white ceramic. The “white in white” look - dramatized by the opaque paper parchment shade - was very popular in the 1970s and evidently a huge seller for Tyndale. Sometimes the cactus lamps are attributed to John Dickinson. Looking in old newspaper & design magazine archives, I’ve not been able to see anything confirming that, but Tyndale designers Josef Head and Joseph Minicucci received lots of press coverage in the early 1970s, including descriptions of this collection in 1972. There are a few missing flakes in the glaze, perhaps original but maybe from minor abrasions but they are barely “flea bites” and other than the almost totally loose felt bottom the condition is very good. The wiring with line-cord switch and double-bulb phenolic socket are original. The socket has a UL ls sticker that also says Tyndale lamps. The wiring seems OK, but has certainly yellowed over 50 plus years. If I were keeping it I’d rewire with a fresh white cord and reaffirm the felt bottom, but think it’s best to offer in original condition (other than the new shade).
