Beautiful vintage Japanese Usaburō Sōsaku (Creative) Kokeshi doll, measuring approximately 7.5 inches tall × 2.75 inches wide.
This distinctive wooden kokeshi features a natural wood-grain body decorated with hand-painted white chrysanthemums and green foliage, along with Japanese calligraphy. The doll has an especially unusual removable dark wooden bob-style hairpiece, which lifts off to reveal the inner head and wooden peg construction.
The reverse/side bears the 卯三郎 (Usaburō) marking and red artist/workshop seal, identifying it with the well-known Usaburō Kokeshi tradition of Gunma, Japan.
The Japanese inscription accompanying the flowers appears to refer to November chrysanthemums, making this an especially attractive seasonal floral design.
