Up for sale is a truly spectacular piece of mid-century Scandinavian motoring and design history: an authentic, original 1950s Volvo factory accessory travel blanket (bilpläd), manufactured in Sweden by the legendary Tidstrand Wool Mill (Tidstrands Yllefabrik).
During the 1950s, powerful car heaters weren't standard, and a heavy, high-quality lap blanket draped over the seats was an essential companion for chilly Swedish road trips. Volvo partnered with premium textile mills like Tidstrand to offer these beautifully designed, vibrant blankets as luxury factory options or promotional dealership gifts.
Design & Material Details:
This blanket features a striking mid-century geometric pattern in rich, vibrant shades of blue with classic twisted fringe ends.
The Tag: Retains its original, crisp white satin label proudly displaying the vintage blue Volvo script logo, alongside the elegant Tidstrand cursive emblem.
Material Analysis: Features the period-correct blend of 50% Wool and 50% Rayon Staple. The addition of rayon staple ("cellull") was a hallmark of mid-century Swedish textile innovation, providing incredible structural durability and allowing the gorgeous blue dyes to remain vividly bright decades later.
Origin: Made in Sweden vintage condition with no major flaws. The colors remain incredibly bright and saturated, and the fabric feels substantial. The original manufacturer's tag is fully intact and legible (please view all photos for close-up details).
