Striking strand of vintage Yoruba mock-coral powder-glass beads from Nigeria.These large brick-red oval and rondelle beads were handmade from powdered glass to imitate the appearance and rich color of natural Mediterranean coral, which has long held ceremonial and status value in West Africa. Older Yoruba powder-glass coral imitations are often referred to as Ateyun beads.Approximately 48 beads.The strand measures approximately 27 inches overall, including the fiber loop, with approximately 21 inches of beads.Each bead is individually formed and varies in size, shape, texture and shade of red. The surfaces display pronounced pits, indentations, inclusions, irregular markings and uneven perforations characteristic of handmade powder-glass construction.Vintage condition with surface wear, scratches, small chips, pitting, discoloration and natural irregularities throughout. At least one bead shows a dark line or possible stable surface fracture, visible in the photographs. Please review every image closely for exact condition.The beads are temporarily strung on aged fiber cord.
