Old WABASH CONDUCTOR hat badge. Stamped brass measures approximately 3 3/4" wide and 1 1/4" high. Sold with two brass fasteners. Please see photographs. Financier Jay Gould acquired and consolidated various lines and officially organized the Wabash Railroad in 1889. The railroad continued to exist under receivership on December 1, 1931. The Wabash Railroad, controlled by the PRR, was organized in July 1941 and bought the Wabash Railway on December 1.
Passenger service on the Wabash was discontinued in 1964 when the Wabash Railroad was leased to the Norfolk & Western Railway, ending independent operations under the Wabash name, though trains like the famous Wabash Cannon Ball kept running under N&W management and crew.
This particular badge would have been manufactured between 1941 and 1964 so the badge is at least 64 years old. There is an identical badge that had the title BRAKEMAN in a nickel finish.
