W I R E S C U L P T U R E\"Industrial Man\" 1961Approx. 13\" Tall x 10\" WideHere is an iconic, mid century wire sculpture that captures the shift
in focus from two to three dimensional sculptural works of art that
accompanied the post war modernist movement.Titled \"Industrial Man\" this work makes a powerful statement
about the changes in men\'s lives in the 20th century.The figure of a man is standing and partial kneeling
on a block of cement. This symbolism signifies
the \"concrete jungle\" of the postwar period where men now
lived in big cities filled with concrete sidewalks, buildings
and roads. The man is an intricate web of tenuous metal wire,
balancing with a leg up as if trying to climb an invisible ladder.
He looks as though he might fall and he uses his arms to
try to maintain balance. This powerful social statement is typical of a mid century art
world that was growing more conscious of urban development and
the stresses of modern living. In this period the cracks in
modern society were becoming visible and modern artists
were the first to create meaningful commentary with their works. The \'visual textural\' factor of this piece is high.
