A wonderful pair of early wartime and postwar charitable fundraising pieces representing two important relief and remembrance efforts associated with the First World War.
TheBelgian Relief Fund “Belgian Babies” corsagefeatures faded blue forget-me-not cloth flowers, a cloth leaf, Belgian tricolor ribbon, and a paper-wrapped wire stem. Most importantly, it retains its original paper tag reading“BELGIAN BABIES.”These corsages were associated with fundraising efforts supporting Belgian relief during the First World War.
TheHaig’s Fund remembrance poppydates to the early 1920s and retains its delicate silk petals, black thread stamens with green-tipped anthers, originalHAIG’S FUNDcenter button, cloth leaf, and paper-wrapped wire stem. Haig’s Fund was established in 1921, and these early poppies are closely connected with the beginnings of the annual Remembrance Day poppy tradition.
