WWII Imperial Japanese Navy Sterling Silver Award Goblet 1929 Tamaya Box:
$450.00

DescriptionThis is an original Imperial Japanese Navy sterling silver award goblet dated 1929.The front features the Imperial Japanese Navy cherry blossom and anchor emblem. The underside is engraved with:“Showa 4 Naval Examination Award”
“Made by Tamaya”
“Pure Silver”The original wooden box also bears a stamp reading “Tokyo Ginza, Made by Tamaya.”The important inscription here is “Naval Examination Award.” The Imperial Japanese Navy depended heavily on specialized technical knowledge and practical proficiency. Sailors and personnel were trained and evaluated in fields such as gunnery, torpedo operation, signaling and communications, engineering, and navigation. This goblet was therefore not simply a souvenir. It was associated with recognition of technical ability and achievement within the Navy.Presentation cups and goblets were commonly used in prewar Japan to mark military service, graduation, competitions, and professional achievement. Naval examples are generally encountered less often than Army-related pieces, and this example is especially appealing because the date, purpose, maker, and silver content are all identified by inscriptions. The piece was made by Tamaya of Ginza, Tokyo, adding another layer of interest as a prewar Japanese silverwork object.Weight: approx. 60 g
Original wooden box included. Please note that age-related tarnish, scratches, wear, and staining are present. Please refer to the photos for condition.A tangible record of the technical culture and personnel standards of the prewar Imperial Japanese Navy.Own a Piece of History.Shipping
