WWII Imperial Japanese Student Mobilization Ideology Book Tojo 1944:

Description

This is an original Japanese wartime book titled “Nihonshugi Shiseikan”, which may be translated as “The Japanese National View of Life and Death.”

It was published in April 1944, during the final and increasingly desperate phase of the Pacific War, as a commemorative publication connected with the mobilization of Japanese students for military service.

When Students Were Sent from the Classroom to the Battlefield

Before the military situation became critical, many students enrolled at Japanese universities and professional schools were allowed to continue their education under military-service deferments.

They were regarded as educated young people who would help build Japan’s future.

By 1943, however, Japan’s manpower shortages had become increasingly severe. As the war situation deteriorated, the government ended deferments for many humanities students and began mobilizing them for military service.

This historic event became known as Gakuto Shutsujin, commonly translated as the Student Mobilization or Student Departure for the Front.

Young men who had expected to remain in classrooms and lecture halls were instead ordered to enter the armed forces. Many were eventually sent to battlefields across Asia and the Pacific.

Published the following year, this book reflects the ideological environment in which those students were prepared to leave civilian life and face war.

Wartime Ideas of Loyalty, Sacrifice and Death

The book includes a contribution by Hideki Tojo, who served as Prime Minister of Japan and Minister of War during much of the Pacific War.

Other wartime intellectual and religious writers discuss subjects including:

  • National ideology
  • Bushido and the samurai tradition
  • Loyalty and service to the state
  • Religion and spiritual discipline
  • Sacrifice
  • The meaning of life and death

Rather than being merely a philosophical work, this book reveals how political, religious and moral ideas were used to prepare young people for military service at a time when Japan was running out of options.

It provides a direct window into the language and values used to explain why even university students—once regarded as essential to the nation’s future—were now being sent to war.

Today, this volume should be understood not as a celebration of war, but as an important historical document showing how wartime Japanese society attempted to justify sacrifice, loyalty and death to a generation of students.

It would be a compelling research and collection piece for those interested in:

  • WWII Japanese history
  • Student Mobilization
  • Japanese wartime propaganda
  • Hideki Tojo
  • Bushido
  • Military education
  • Japanese religious and intellectual history
