Offered here is an original autograph signature of Franklin MacVeagh (1837–1934), boldly signed on an official engraved card reading “The Secretary of the Treasury.” A clean and attractive government-era autograph from the Taft Administration.
Franklin MacVeagh served as the 45th United States Secretary of the Treasury under President William Howard Taft from 1909 to 1913. A prominent Chicago banker, businessman, and political reformer, MacVeagh played a major role in modernizing Treasury Department operations during the Progressive Era. He streamlined customs and revenue systems, eliminated hundreds of unnecessary government positions, and pushed efficiency reforms throughout the department. He also served as director of the Commercial National Bank of Chicago and was associated with influential civic reform movements in Chicago.
MacVeagh came from a highly influential political family. His brother, Wayne MacVeagh, served as U.S. Attorney General under Presidents Garfield and Arthur, while later generations of the family became diplomats and ambassadors.
This piece is especially desirable because the signature appears on an official Treasury Secretary card rather than a clipped album page, giving it excellent display appeal and direct historical association with his cabinet office.
