White Pines State Park preserves the southernmost stand of native white pines in Illinois, protected after supporters fought for state park status from the early 1900s until the park's establishment in 1927. Illinois set aside this remarkable forest when residents raised money and lobbied the Illinois legislature, with the bill first passing in 1903 but vetoed due to costs.
The Civilian Conservation Corps transformed White Pines during the 1930s Depression era, constructing rustic log facilities, bridges, stone walls, and footbridge structures that harmonized with the natural landscape.
The CCC built lasting structures at White Pines that complemented many Illinois state parks during this period, with the program constructing nearly 400 bridges statewide.
