Following the October Revolution, the Ukrainian People\'s Republic (UPR) proclaimed total independence from Russia in January 1918, amidst the Ukrainian-Soviet War, and held elections for the Ukrainian Constituent Assembly.

Over 70% of votes went to Ukrainian parties, while Bolsheviks received only 10%. Due to the Bolshevik invasion, chaotic conditions, and inability to vote in occupied regions, the assembly never officially convened

The Yiddishe Folkspartei (Folk Party), which championed the goal of Jewish national autonomy in the diaspora, was founded in Saint Petersburg in 1906 under the leadership of the historian Simon Dubnow and other Jewish intellectuals. The party first ran candidates for political office when Germany occupied Poland during World War I and existed as a political party in Poland throughout the interwar years. Other parties and groups bore the same name and followed the same ideology in Lithuania and Latvia, and also in Ukraine from 1917 to 1921 during the brief period of the independent Ukrainian People’s Republic.
