This SCARCE METAL TOKEN was issued circa 1848 to raise funds and support for the creation of government sponsored cooperatives of workersin order to guaranteeemployment for the urban poor in Franc, the brain child of French Socialist, Louis Blanc.
The token was issued by Tailor Workers, as stated in French on the reverse.
The face of the token displays an image of Louis Blanc, and reads in French: Organisation du Travail (in English, Organization of Work.) The reverse displays laurel wreaths and the date 1848. It reads in French: A Leur Ami Louis Blanc Les Ouvriers Tailleurs (in English, To Their Friend Louis Blanc The Tailor Workers.)
Louis Blanc (29 October 1811 – 6December 1882) was a French socialist politician, journalist andhistorian. He called for the creation of cooperatives in order to guaranteeemployment for the urban poor. Although Blanc\'s ideas of the workers\'cooperatives were never realized, his political and social ideas greatlycontributed to the development of socialism in France.
Following the Revolution of 1848,Blanc became a member of the provisional government and began advocatingfor cooperatives which would be initially aided by the government butultimately controlled by the workers themselves, replacing capitalist enterprises. These cooperatives were to be associations ofpeople who produced together and divided the profit accordingly. Blanc\'s advocacy failed;caught between radical worker tendencies and the National Guard, he was forcedinto exile.
Blanc returned to France in 1870,shortly before the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War, where he served as amember of the National Assembly for Seine. While he did not support theParis Commune, he successfully proposed amnesty to the Communards.
