A rare and beautifully preserved shellwork devotional grotto, featuring a Sacred Heart Jesus figure housed in a hand arranged shell shrine. Each shell has been placed with care, forming an intimate and contemplative space, reminiscent of Victorian home altars and seaside pilgrimage souvenirs.
These shell grottoes were often created as expressions of private faith, given as tokens of remembrance, or kept in bedrooms and small prayer corners. The craftsmanship here has depth and tenderness: soft tones of coral, sand, and pearl, arranged to cradle the figure as though in a natural cave of the sea.
