Offered here is an original mid-19th century handwritten manuscript copy of the popular American poem “The Blue Juniata,” measuring approximately 7.5 x 9.5 inches on a single folded sheet. The piece is executed in blue ink with a decorative flourished title header and careful ornamental penmanship typical of the 1840s–1860s period.

The poem, first published in 1841 and written by Marion Dix Sullivan, tells the romanticized story of the Native American Indianmaiden Alfarata along Pennsylvania’s Juniata River. It became one of the most widely copied sentimental poems of the era and frequently appeared in friendship albums, school copybooks, and personal commonplace books.

The manuscript appears to date circa 1845–1870 based on the iron-gall ink toning, paper quality, penmanship style, and format. The sheet shows fold lines, scattered foxing, and several period ink transfer spots/stains. There is minor edge loss at the lower right corner. The reverse shows offsetting from the ink where the sheet was folded. No visible printed text — this is entirely handwritten.
