In 1888 two German immigrant brothers, Dietrich and Charles Gristede opened their first small grocery store at the corner of Second Avenue and 42nd Street in New York City. At the time this location was considered to be far uptown but the brothers flourished and continued to grow throughout NYC and are still successful to this day.
This early wooden store sign is believed to be from the original grocery on Second Avenue and is believed to have originally been attached to a metal bracket which hung above the entrance. There is evidence at the top of the sign where it would have been attached to a bracket.
The sign is beautifully hand painted with gold gilt lettering and is loaded with tons of approx 130 year old age and character. This historic early piece of NYC history will look equally extraordinary hanging in a home kitchen or even in the corporate office of the current Gristede's Brothers Grocery.
