c1902-07 LDS Church Presidents Joseph Smith The Bureau Salt Lake PostcardDescription:
Early undivided-back Salt Lake City postcard depicting the first six presidents of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: Joseph Smith, Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow, and Joseph F. Smith. Joseph Smith appears prominently at center, surrounded by the five succeeding presidents in a color-tinted portrait montage. The printed caption reads “Presidents of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.”
The left margin carries the imprint “The Bureau, Temple Block, Salt Lake City,” identifying the card with the Church's early Bureau of Information operation at Temple Block, now Temple Square. The Bureau was established in the early twentieth century to receive visitors, distribute literature, and provide information about the Church and its historic Salt Lake City center.
The card can be dated closely to the opening years of Joseph F. Smith's presidency. He became the sixth president of the Church in 1901, while the reverse is the classic U.S. undivided-back format used before divided-back postcards became standard in 1907. Taken together with the Bureau imprint, the card is best dated circa 1902–1907.
The reverse is printed in green with “POST CARD - CARTE POSTALE,” a boxed “PLACE POSTAGE STAMP HERE” area, and “THIS SIDE FOR THE ADDRESS.” It is unused and unmailed, with no address, message, stamp, or postal cancellation. A desirable early Salt Lake City religious-history postcard with crossover appeal to collectors of Mormon and Latter-day Saint history, Joseph Smith, Temple Square, Utah ephemera, early postcard publishing, and church leadership portraiture.
