The SS Christopher Columbus was a whaleback passenger steamer, built in 1893 for the World\'s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. It was the only whaleback ship ever built for passenger service and was known for its unique, low-profile hull, designed for efficiency and stability on the Great Lakes. The ship operated between Chicago and Milwaukee for over 40 years under the Goodrich Transit Company, transporting thousands of passengers each season.
Hold-to-light postcards were produced mainly from the late 1890s to the early 1910s, often printed in Germany or the United States. These cards used a technique where thin areas of paper were carefully cut out and covered with translucent material so that light would reveal hidden details—in this case, the ship\'s interior lighting, the moon, antennae, and reflections on the water.
