Originalcirca 1905 antique Canadian postcardshowing the interior of theHochelaga Convent in Montreal, Quebec, specifically a“Suite of Class Rooms.”
The fascinating interior photograph shows several connected classrooms with rows of wooden desks and chairs, blackboards, religious artwork and educational displays, providing an unusual glimpse intogirls’ education in Montreal at the beginning of the 20th century.
The card is marked:
“Montreal. Hochelaga Convent. Suite of Class Rooms.”
“Montreal Import Co., Montreal. No. 82.”
An archival collection catalogs this exact Montreal Import Co. postcard and dates it to approximately1905.
Hochelaga Convent was established in1860as a boarding school operated by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. It stood at3587 Notre-Dame Street East in Montrealand remained in operation until 1972, when the complex was demolished.
The reverse is an early“PRIVATE POST CARD – Address to be written on this side”format and is completely unposted.
This is a particularly interesting postcard for collectors ofMontreal history, Canadian education, Catholic schools, convents, classroom interiors and early Canadian photography.
