Original vintage black-and-white photograph showing two historically significant early submarines in harbor.
The long submarine in the background is the former Imperial German Navy U-111, a World War I U-boat surrendered after the Armistice and brought to the United States in 1919. The vessel in the foreground is a United States Navy R-class submarine. Its individual hull number is not visible in this photograph.
Period lettering within the image reads:
“‘ROUND THE WORLD’ HOLLAND SUBMARINE”
The photograph appears to date from approximately 1919–1921, during U-111’s period in United States custody, when the captured submarine was displayed and evaluated by the U.S. Navy. The exact harbor and the identity of the foreground R-class boat have not been conclusively established.
This photograph came from a period military album containing numerous Pearl Harbor and naval images. The present photograph is earlier than most World War II material and should not be interpreted as a Pearl Harbor scene.
The reverse is blank.

Condition: Original vintage condition with age-related curvature, light toning and spotting, minor edge and corner wear, and small surface marks visible in the photographs. No writing or stamps on the reverse. Please examine all photographs carefully for the complete condition.
