A long, low-roofed lodge sits dwarfed beneath the sheer north face of Big Four Mountain, snowfields still clinging to the rock above dense stands of old-growth conifer. The inn\'s name comes from a natural number \"4\" shape formed by dark rock and snow on the mountainside, first noticed by miners working the area before the resort existed.
Big Four Inn opened on July 2, 1921, built by Everett sawmill owners Wyatt and Bethel Rucker as a wilderness retreat for the wealthy, reachable only by a private rail line until roads finally reached the area more than a decade later. Guests came for golf, tennis, horseback riding, and the dramatic ice caves that formed each year at the mountain\'s base, drawn by a level of luxury, hot and cold running water in every cabin, that was almost unimaginable this deep into the Cascades.
The photographer behind this card, J. A. Juleen of Everett, documented the inn and its mountain backdrop extensively through his decades-long commercial studio, producing some of the most widely circulated images of the resort during its heyday.
The inn burned to the ground in September 1949, standing empty after road construction had closed it the year before. Only its massive stone fireplace survives today, marking a trailhead where visitors now hike past the ghost of a resort that once drew six thousand guests a year to stand exactly where this photograph was taken.
