Castleden’s rendering of Madame John’s Legacy captures one of the oldest surviving examples of French Colonial architecture in New Orleans. Readers of George Washington Cable’s short story Tite Poulette helped bring the house back into public awareness, but the building’s roots go much deeper. Many old Creole families long believed the ground floor once served as the city’s earliest French jail, a theory strengthened by its cramped compartments and tiny iron-grated windows.

The house carries the hallmarks of a Bienville-period structure, with steep roofs, broad galleries and timber framing that predates the later Spanish influence. Its courtyard holds its own bit of drama. A hanging lamp was found buried among the rubble of the old cells and now hangs in its original bracket, a small reminder of the rhythms of early city life.
