Castleden gives Jackson Square the leafy, romantic framing that locals recognize instantly. Long before it took Andrew Jackson’s name, the space served as the Place d’Armes, the military parade ground for the colonial city. It once had forts, a wall and even a moat, which feels almost impossible to imagine when you see artists and musicians working along the fence today.

Several major turning points in New Orleans history happened here, including the lowering of the French flag and the raising of the American one in 1803 after the Louisiana Purchase. The equestrian statue at the center of the square was created by Clark Mills, a blacksmith who surprised everyone by producing the first equestrian sculpture in the United States with no visible support under the horse.
