View Larger Image   Starrett Outside Spring Caliper w/ Spring Nut   Description: This is a very nice 5" outside spring caliper, with early patent dates on it! It is marked "THE L.S.S. CO. ATHOL MASS. PAT. JUNE 2.85", and "PAT. JAN. 30 1900" on the spring nut, or speed nut. Since is is marked with "THE" before the Starrett name, this one was made after 1909, but not very long after, as the patent dates were not on the calipers in the 1920's era. The spring nut allows the user to simply pull or push the nut along the threaded rod, once the spring pressure of the caliper is released, making for fast adjustments. With the pressure on the nut, it works just like a normal nut would, turn it for fine adjustment. Works good too! This caliper is in about 97% like new condition, no rust, damage, or past owner's names or marks on it! A few minor edge dings noted, very nice!
