View Larger Image   Champion Dearment Wire Cutters Heavy Duty 17 inch   Description: This is an antique heavy duty cam action diagonal wire cutter with adjustable cutter head positioning for leverage feature. The cutter head section can be mounted in two different positions to the handles section, via the two threaded pivot joint screws. The distance between to choice of two joint hole locations is 3/4". The tool as shown in the pictures is 17" long overall, with a good useable cutter section that is 1" long. Although the cutter jaws are considered diagonal, the cutter mouth is cast at about 30 degrees, designed to allow wire end cuts while give the use clearence to move the handles. The cutter head section has one main pivot joint, and joins the handles at two pivot point, compounding the force of the pressure applied to the handles during cutting. The cutters can also be closed in two ways, one the standard pliers movement, pressing the two handles toward one another, the other way is to spead the handles away from each other making the handles look like wings, will also close the wire jaw together. The second way causes the jaws to close without the benifet of the cast cutter stop, in other words, one must be careful to not damage the cutting edge as there is no stop to keep the cutter jaws from hitting together. The first way will make use of the cutter depth stop, and the jaw will just barely touch together no matter how much pressure is applied to the handle (within reason). The cutting edges have been slightly sharpened over the years, but are in good shape, not dinged up, sharp, with about 80% parallel alignment when fully closed. We note pitting on the handles and arms sections evenly spread about everywhere except on the cutter jaws area, where only minor pitting is noted in the general area, no pitting on the cutting edges themselves, no rust now. The cutting head is marked "CHAMPION DEARMENT MEADVILLE PA" in raise cast lettering. All the joints are snug, and these wire cutters seem to cut 1/4" wire effortlessly. One may be able to cut 3/8" wire, but not much bigger as the jaws will only open to about 1/2" using either pivot hole position.
