View Larger Image   North Brothers Yankee No. 2100-10IN Ratchet Brace Rare Type!   Description: This is a nice clean 10" swing, heavy duty ratchet bit brace with nice solid, dark brown hard rubber handles. It is marked "YANKEE NO. 2100-10IN NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA PA. U.S.A. PATENT NOV.6.23 OTHERS PENDING" on the area near the chuck, and marked on the end handle"YANKEE". What is rare about this brace is that most braces manufactured in this time where marked with a 2nd patent "JAN.13.25" rather than others pending. So we can safely assume that this brace was made sometime in 1924, maybe early 1925. Anyway, it is a rare model, as production increase on this model in the 1930-late 40 for North Brothers, since so many telephone companies choose this brace as a standard tool for their linesmen. I have seen a number of these braces with a custom fitted leather strap and tool-belt clip, for a linesman to have with him on a ladder or pole. It measures 14" long overall and 10" sweep. No rust, no pitting, about 95% of the original nickel plating intact, all the features are in very good working order. The 2-jaw chuck is amoung the best ever made for holding the auger bits with the tapered end shanks. The chuck is the spring loaded 2-jaw type, it works well with the super nice ratchet system that has a lock position and the chuck has the wrench flat on the outer chuck sleeve for tightening or loosening the auger bit in the chuck, well designed with one of the quitest, and most responsive ratchet systems we have observed in anitique braces. A nice clean older brace, with ball bearing drive on the end handle, in very good working condition overall! A very nice heave duty (weight is 3.2 pounds)auger bit brace, with good solid handles that have some wear, mostly minor wear, some tiny scratches. Please also note the differences on the metal areas of the ball bearing end handle. The later 1925 patent model was considerablely different in this general area.
