View Larger Image   Millers Falls Brace Hand Drill Combination Tool No. 182   Description: This is a nice clean, rare and unique combination hand drill/ratchet bit brace tool! It has a 10" main arm swing diameter, and the removeable side crank has a 6" diameter swing handle arm. This unique tool has a 2 jaw chuck that is marked "MILLERS FALLS CO. MILLERS FALLS MASS. PAT. JAN.14.1871 AUG.15.187?" on the chuck sleeve. The auger bit chuck is in very good working order. This model has no chuck jaw springs inside, none where in it's original design, the jaw fall open automatically if you hold the brace in the chuck above the end handle position. This particular model had the rosewood swing arm handle, and end handle, but the hand drill crank handle appears to be of a newer vintage. The handle arm and the hand crank is not marked, but the handle is fully functional, and the rosewood stained handle is about 99% like new condition, works great! The red Jappanning on the hand crank steel is about 65% intact, and the rosewood is very nice, with only minor wear to report. There is a few dings on the chuck outer sleeve, and a few scratches, but it works fine, and chucks up the auger bits we tested in it just fine. Later models than this one have a beefed up spindle pad for the end handle spindle, this one is brass on the pad and quite small in comparison, but works great, not damaged or sloppy. All the gears on the hand crank area are in great shape, turns smoothly. The crank wheel/handle assembly is removeable, and the ratchet system is fully functional when it is not attached, but in this model when the crank wheel is fastened into postion and attached, the ratchet system is disabled automatically to allow for smooth hand drill operation, works great, a nice design!
